Winter Driving Tips

Winter Driving Tips
2nd December 2019 Jo Lees

Long nights, icy roads, flooded country lanes, more breakdowns and long delays, the winter can be a difficult time for you and your company, especially when you’re managing a fleet of vehicles that all have to work efficiently and extra hard throughout the colder months.

Thankfully there are a few simple tips to help:

The Battery

The battery should be the first thing you check in your vehicle. If your vehicle is reluctant to start on cold mornings it could be a sign the battery needs replacing.

Service Your Vehicle

If you haven’t done it already and your vehicle is due a service, it’s best to get it done before the temperatures drop.

The Tyres

The tyres are another vital part of your vehicle you should check. They must be in good condition because of their key part in steering and braking. Winter tyres will help you make sure you can stop your vehicle in icy and snowy conditions.

Clean Your Lights

As well as checking that your lights are all in working order, you should also make sure that all your lights and indicators are clean and visible to other drivers. The darker months mean your lights need to be in the best shape for the safety of you and other drivers on the road.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Make sure to pack an emergency kit in case you break down. Charge your phone before you head off and make sure you have the number of your breakdown service. It’s also worth including something to keep you warm, some food and a drink.

Prepare

Spend five minutes allowing your vehicle to warm up and clear all snow and ice from your windows. Take extra time to plan your journey, make sure you have enough fuel and factor in more travel time. If you are driving an electric vehicle make sure it is fully charged. Take your time and pay attention to other road users.
