Proposed MOT changes

There has been a lot of talk about the proposed changes to the MOT test and how this could affect safety and long-term costs to car owners and fleet operators.  proMOTe, an organisation set up to keep the MOT test as an annual test, says

As a regular check on the cars and vans that use Britain’s roads, the MOT helps to save lives and keep our roads safe for all road users. Changing the frequency of the test will make roads more dangerous.

The MOT also helps to keep the cost of motoring down, by picking up minor faults before they become big ones and stopping insurance premiums rising by keeping down the number of accidents.

The campaign has been backed by many automotive industry supporters, including the RAC, The AA, Halfords, Aviva and the MOT Trade Forum.

The Government, announcing the proposals, said

Car technology has come a long way since the 1960s That’s why we think its right to look again to check whether we still have the right balance of MOT testing for modern vehicles.

Do you agree with the proposals? How will they affect your business? Will the proposed savings in moving the test to every two years end up costing companies running fleets more in servicing costs and fleet downtime.
