 Company car drivers speeding?

company car drivers

As a fleet manager do you ever wonder how safely your company car drivers are driving? Whether they ever check if their brake lights are out or if they stick to the speed limit? Unfortunately, recent reports suggest that one in four crashes on UK roads involve a business driver, most likely due to speeding. Stats from the report show that company drivers who drive more than 80% of their annual mileage on work related journeys have more than 50% more injury accidents than similar drivers who do no work related mileage. So is there a reason that company car drivers find it more acceptable to speed when on the roads than others?

Safety issues and fleet drivers

It’s a given that we are likely to be under more pressure to get somewhere promptly, be it for a meeting or maybe to make a delivery. Some of us may be forgetting that although an 80mph speed limit has been talked about it hasn’t been implemented just yet and is still under review for a reason.

However not only does this pose greater safety issues it also means our company car drivers are using more fuel on their journeys. Not something companies may take kindly to given the issues with the current cost of fuel.  After doing some research Fleet News reported “the worst speeding culprit also achieved the worst fuel efficiency at 43mpg, while the driver who registered the fewest speeding violations had the best efficiency, at 62mpg. Both drivers were in the same make and model of car”.

So how can can we improve the attitude of our company drivers when it comes to speeding? Do all company car drivers need a crash course in speeding before they’re allowed on the road? let us know your thoughts in the comments or over on Twitter
