Will we ever see our company cars racing down the motorway at 80mph? The idea was introduced in the autumn of 2011 and plans for the motorway speed limit to be raised are still being considered by the Government. There’s no denying as company car drivers we’re all sitting here with our fingers crossed hoping the new law will be passed. After all who doesn’t need more time? An extra 10 minutes in bed, arriving to appointments earlier, it’s like music to our ears!

However recent research has put a dampener on the situation suggesting that a raise in the speed limit will only cause more  shunts and crashes, and there is not enough protection to prevent cars from coming off the roads. Due to the increase of speed, the severity in accidents could also become greater. If the speed limit is raised though, there will still be some sections of the motorway where the speed limit will still remain at 70mph. I wonder how many speeding tickets excuses will be “I thought this was the 80 mph zone!”

We also raise the question that if the speed limit is upped to 80mph, will people then push the boundaries and think they can get away with driving at 90mph? Although we dream of a world where we all drive super cars too fast & too furious, in reality are we putting our fleet safety at risk for a bit of short lived fun and extra convenience?  We’ll let you decide 😉
