Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ)

Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ)
21st February 2020 Jo Lees

Birmingham is on a journey to cleaner air.

Populations are growing, new developments are being built, rail and metro systems are getting bigger and faster, HS2 has been approved and the Commonwealth Games arrive in 2022!

Birmingham City Council’s plans for a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) were approved by the UK government in March 2019 and were due to come into force in January 2020. However, government delays in delivering vehicle checking software have meant that the zone won’t come into force until at least July 2020.

CAZ will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Zone will cover all the roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road, but not the Middleway itself. Vehicles entering the area inside the ring road will be picked up by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, so there won’t be any barriers or toll booths.

To avoid paying the Clean Air Zone charge drivers and some companies may consider options around upgrading their vehicle/s. If you are considering buying a new vehicle, you should consider the costs over its lifetime. The upfront cost of a diesel or petrol may be lower than that of an equivalent electric model, but the cost of running an electric vehicle overtime is considered lower. The Government also subsidise purchases of some electric vehicles https://www.gov.uk/plug-in-car-van-grants/eligibility  and offer some grants for installing home charging points https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/government-grants-for-low-emission-vehicles#electric-vehicle-homecharge-scheme .
