More Company Vehicles Fitted With Winter Tyres

A few years ago, demand for winter tyres was miniscule; only about 1% of the total UK car market.

At the start of 2011 the market had increased to 450 000 units, far outstripping some stock forecasts.  This year, Fleet vehicle demand for winter tyres soared to record levels as Fleet Managers prepared their company vehicles for the snow.

With wintry weather arriving for most of the country this weekend, Fleet Managers had prepared their cars for the cold conditions. Vehicles off the road leads to lost revenue and working hours, so it’s key that everything that can avoid this is fully embraced!

Winter tyres include a greater percentage of natural rubber and silica so there is not as much hardening as found in synthetic rubber in cold conditions; they provide better traction at lower temperatures.  Winter tyres provide more small-tread areas, increasing traction on snow and, in wet conditions, allowing water to escape from under the tire more easily, reducing the risk of hydroplaning.  Winter tyres do not eliminate skidding on ice and snow, but they greatly reduce the risk.
