This year’s top winter driving advice

The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder. Winter is here again and for most of us that means driving a little more slowly and carefully. So far, forecasters are predicting a fairly mild December but the weather picture in the new year remains relatively unknown. Unlike other countries like Germany and Switzerland where winter tires and snow chains are obligatory in the colder months of the year UK law take a fairly relaxed approach when it comes to winter driving advice. Nevertheless, it’s well worth taking account of this winter driving advice to make sure that you and anyone driving your company cars.

Visibility is key

It’s essential that you keep the windscreen clear and make sure that it’s clear before you leave home. A key piece of winter driving advice is not to leave the house until your windscreen is completely clear. It’s very dangerous to drive when you can’t see clearly and, even if you’re only driving on minor roads it’s essential to make sure that you can see as well as possible whenever you’re driving.

Check the Battery Status

Batteries and other electronic gadgets aren’t keen on cold winter weather. That’s why it’s so important to make sure that all of the electrics in your car are in an excellent condition before the cold weather sets in. If you take action now it’s far less likely that you’ll need to use your complimentary AA membership if your battery goes bad on the side of the road this Christmas.

Tyres

There are few places in the UK where snow chains are required on a day-to-day basis. Tyre tread however is a completely different matter. Your tyre tread could have worn away since last winter and that may mean that you need to replace your tyres before winter really sets in. Our friends at the AA recommend that you have at least 3mm of tread on any tyres you’ll be using in snowy and icy conditions.
